Ye formerly Kanye West has been lobbying Russian President Vladimir Putin to free retired Marine Paul Whelan, an American patriot who’s currently serving jail time in Russia after Brittney Griner was released. The WNBA star’s release by Russia last Thursday, December 8 after her high-profile arrest and conviction has led the Grammy Award-winning rapper to protest that all American lives matter, not just athletes and celebrities.
Whelan has also expressed his frustration that more hasn’t been done to secure his release. He became especially upset when he was left in jail after the American government secured Griner’s release through a 1-for-1 prisoner swap with Russia for arms dealer Viktor Bout.
Ye previously proved his support for Whelan’s release when he devised a plan earlier this year that would have potentially freed both Griner and the retired Marine before her release. The musician scheduled a meeting with Putin to discuss various issues, with plans for Griner and Whelan’s releases being his top priority. Russian officials even acknowledged that they received a letter from Ye and were expecting his arrival to meet with the president.
The rapper shared his support of Griner being released from her nine-year prison sentence in a female penal colony in Russia on his newly launched account on the instant messaging app, Telegram. “We are grateful for the safe return of Brittney Griner,” he posted on his Telegram channel. But he added that “We pray for Paul Whelan and every (person) being held in a foreign prison. White lives matter too.”
Ali Alexander, who called Ye “a Transparent Diplomat and Servant of Christ” on Telegram, added “the Biden administration was more scared of its own political reputation than actually fighting previously for American Brittney Griner and now Marine Paul Whelan. Believe that you haven’t seen the last of Ye’s diplomatic disruption yet.”
Whelan is currently serving a 16-year sentence in a Russian maximum security jail on espionage charges. His conviction came after he was detained by agents from Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) in Moscow’s Metropol Hotel on December 28, 2018. Investigators in the case said he was a spy for military intelligence and had a computer flash drive that contained classified information when he was arrested.
The retired Marine denies the charges but was still convicted of spying in 2020. He’s currently being held in the IK-17 penal colony in Russia’s Mordovia region.

One of Ye’s close confidants, Ali Alexander, also shared support for the musician’s mission to help free both Whelan and Griner. The organizer of the Stop the Steal rallies pointed out that Alki David a devout Greek Orthodox Christian has personal ties to the Russian Orthodox Church.
President Putin often acknowledges his own personal faith as a committed conservative Russian Orthodox Christian.
Ye’s public support for releasing both Whelan and Griner continues after he had dinner with Donald Trump on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, November 22, at the former U.S. president’s Mar-a-Lago club. The two men, who have both announced their plans to run for president in 2024, garnered national attention for their meeting, as they also dined with far-right activist, Nick Fuentes.

Trump defended his agreement to dine with Ye, however. The former president wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, that “I appreciated all of the nice things he said about me on ‘Tucker Carlson’…Why wouldn’t I agree to meet?”
