Movie News Cheat Sheet: Seyfried For Lovelace, Lopez for Carmen Sandiego, Del Toro For Star Trek 2 And More

Sunday, November 6th, 2011

The theme of this week’s Cheat Sheet? Casting. Well, for the most part. We’ve got the best of the best including J.J. Abrams’ hopes to cast Benicio del Toro as his villain in Star Trek 2 as well as a slew of potential recruits for Warner Bros’ Akira. It’s been confirmed that Jennifer Lopez is producing a Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego movie, but now the question is, will she star in it, too? Then there’s Andy Serkis who just earned a solid paycheck for signing on for Rise of the Planet of the Apes 2 as well as subsequent Apes films. Yes, this Cheat Sheet is certainly…

Wrath of the Titans Casting Rumors Begin Circulating

Friday, January 7th, 2011

Casting rumors have already begun circulating around ‘Wrath of the Titans,’ the upcoming sequel to last year’s action movie ‘Clash of the Titans,’ Collider.com is reporting. Director Jonathan Liebesman, who is replacing Louis Leterrier for the follow-up after the original received heavy criticism, has already confirmed that Edgar Ramirez and Toby Kebbell have already been cast. They’ll be joining several actors who are returning from the original movie, including Sam Worthington, Gemma Arterton, Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes. Other actors currently in talks to join ‘Wrath of the Titans’ are Bill Nighy, who is being considered to portray Greek god Hephaestus. Hayley Atwell, who will appear in the upcoming superhero…

Gemma Arterton Reveals She'll Appear in Robert Capa Biopic

Sunday, December 26th, 2010

British actress Gemma Arterton has inadvertently revealed that she will be appearing in Michael Mann’s upcoming biopic about combat photographer Robert Capa, Comingsoon.net is reporting. While accepting Total Film‘s 2010 award for “Hottest Actress,” the ‘Clash of the Titans’ star accidentally said that since she’s aiming to sign onto more diversified roles, the Capa biography “is confirmed.” After adding that she wasn’t sure if she was allowed to be talking about the project yet, Arterton also let it slip that ‘The Social Network’ star Andrew Garfield is also on board for the Capa biopic. In the Sony release, Arterton will appear as Capa’s fellow photographer Gerda Tara, the first female…

James Cameron Wants Louis Leterrier to Direct Fantastic Voyage

Sunday, October 24th, 2010

James Cameron is trying to get director Louis Leterrier to helm the upcoming ‘Fantastic Voyage’ movie, Cinemablend.com is reporting. The ‘Avatar’ director and writer wants Leterrier in part because his last movie, ‘Clash of the Titans,’ grossed nearly half a billion dollars worldwide, despite receiving poor critical reviews. The news comes after it was revealed that Cameron brought in ‘Shutter Island’ writer Laeta Kalogridis to put the finishing touches on the script of Fox’s new remake. The production team for ‘Fantastic Voyage,’ which is based on a ride in Disney World’s Epcot park, is trying to start shooting early next year, as Leterrier is currently free. He pasted on directing…

Clash of the Titans 2 May Shoot In January 2011

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

In my dream world, films would need at least a 60% on the Tomatometer to permit the making of a sequel, but sadly, critical reception holds no bearing upon the green light of subsequent films, only the box office does. As reported by the Los Angeles Times (via ComingSoon), Clash of the Titans 2 could begin filming as early as January 2011. The film earned a weak 30% on Rotten Tomatoes, but that’s rendered meaningless by its $486.8 haul at the worldwide box office. The first film’s director, Louis Leterrier, took a pass on handling the sequel, so the folks at Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have been on the…

Robin Hood Is No Match For Iron Man At The Box Office

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

Bows and arrows are clearly no match for Tony Stark’s Iron Man suit. The early numbers are in and Iron Man 2 held up quite well taking in an impressive $53 million in its second week. Robin Hood’s $37.1 million doesn’t sound all that bad, but can be seen as a massive failure considering the Ridley Scott/Russell Crowe epic cost a whopping $200 million to make. The brutal big boys were followed by the Amanda Seyfried romancer Letters to Juliet. That one opened up with $13.7 million while Queen Latifah’s comedy, Just Right, followed with $8.5. How to Train Your Dragon enjoyed yet another week in the top five pulling…

How To Train Your Dragon Edges Out Kick-Ass At The Box Office

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

Kick-Ass may have kicked ass with the critics, but the same isn’t true for the public. After a massive marketing effort, the superhero flick only took in $19.7 million leaving it way short of Lionsgate’s rumored $30 million goal. Hopefully the film will have some legs and win as big as hoped as time goes on, but for now, Matthew Vaughn and crew will have to settle for second best. How to Train Your Dragon reclaimed the top spot just edging outĀ Kick-Ass with $20 million, boosting its grand total to $159 million. Finishing the weekend in third is Tina Fey and Steve Carell’s Date Night, which held up quite well…

Clash Of The Titans Conquers The Box Office

Sunday, April 4th, 2010

Perseus didn’t only overpower the evils unleashed by Hades this weekend, he conquered the entire country. Clash of the Titans took in a massive $61.4 million making in the top grossing Easter release of all time. The previous record holder didn’t even stand a chance. Back in 2006, Scary Movie 4 earned $40.2 million. But Clash‘s monstrous total wasn’t enough to take down Fast and Furious‘ $70.95 million haul, leaving it as the second biggest April earner. I didn’t love Clash of the Titans, but did enjoy it. While I’d recommend the film to anyone looking for a little action, its enormous 3D earning is extremely unnerving. Of its $61.4…

Clash of the Titans Movie Review

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

Title: Clash of the Titans Directed By: Louis Leterrier Starring: Sam Worthington, Gemma Arterton, Ralph Fiennes, Liam Neeson, Alexa Davalos, Mads Mikkelsen The ‘open item’ policy at stores like Best Buy is great. Someone returns a lightly used product, it’s repackaged and resold at a lesser cost. The downside is that it’s a final sale deal. If you’re used item is actually used and abused, you’re screwed. Post-production 3D conversion is the ‘open item’ of filmmaking. You’re creating the effect of shooting in 3D, but at a lesser cost. But sadly, in Clash of the Titans’ case, 3D conversion is damaged goods and is just a gimmick, not a good…
