DVD Review: Bridesmaids, The Tempest, The Conspirator, Dressed to Kill and The Sentiment of The Flesh

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

Too many romantic comedies witlessly hone in on the differences between men and women to create a heightened-stakes backdrop in which every interaction with the opposite sex is imbued with some sort of grand, gender-statement significance, which is of course then supposed to be neatly resolved and tidily put away by the time a paired-off happy ending rolls around. Co-written by Annie Mumolo and “Saturday Night Live”‘s Kristen Wiig, “Bridesmaids” instead focuses a considerable amount of its energy on female friendships, yes, but also the things women want in relationships — love, security, availability — that are the same as men. The result is the best female-fronted Hollywood comedy in years, and a…

The Whistleblower Movie Review 2

Sunday, August 7th, 2011

Title: The Whistleblower Director: Larysa Kondracki Starring: Rachel Weisz, David Strathairn, Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Anna Anissimova, Roxana Condurache, Monica Bellucci, Vanessa Redgrave A powerhouse drama set against the backdrop of a very complicated and muddied story, The Whistleblower is one of those dramas that induce wearied sighs, furrowed brows and worried thoughts about the default state of human nature. Inspired by actual events, it’s both a crusading cop investigatory thriller and a sort of surrogate, gender-politic struggle-for-equality tale loosely in the vein of North Country. The story centers around Kathy Bolkovac (Rachel Weisz), a tough and exceedingly competent Nebraskan police officer who – facing a divorce, denied a job transfer and wanting…

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

Title: The Whistleblower Directed By: Larysa Kondracki Written By: Eilis Kirwan, Larysa Kondracki Cast: Rachel Weisz, David Strathairn, Nikolaj Lie Kaas , Anna Anissimova Raya, Roxana Condurache, Monica Bellucci, Vanessa Redgrave Screened at: Review 1, NYC, 7/21/11 Opens: August 5, 2011 It takes a special kind of courage to be a whistleblower. You will probably be ostracized by your colleagues, you may be fired on a technicality, and you could even be killed. In a broad sense, Larysa Kondracki’s film, “The Whistleblower,” can be torn from today’s headlines. Sean Hoare, a journalist who blew the whistle on Rupert Murdock’s “News of the World” tabloid hackings, was found dead in his…

Howl Movie Review

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Title: Howl Directed By: Rob Epstein, Jeffrey Friedman Starring: James Franco, Jon Hamm, Mary-Lousie Parker, David Strathairn, Jeff Daniels, Treat Williams, Jeff Daniels, Bob Balaban, Alessandro Nivola Lacking an appreciation for poetry? No, I’m not talking about Shel Silverstein-type childhood favorites; I’m referring to the serious stuff, specifically, Allen Ginsberg’s work. If the answer is no, Howl certainly isn’t for you. Not that a moviegoer must like the person, the event or the subject a factual film focuses on, but Howl is so difficult to enjoy as it is that if you don’t find entertainment in slam poetry, the film is a guaranteed lost cause. James Franco stars as Ginsberg,…
