Joss Whedon announced on his blog, last night, that today will be the first day of production on the much anticipated “The Avengers”. This is “The Expendables” of comic book movies. Starting in 2008 when Marvel/Paramount released the original “Iron Man” and rebooted “The Incredible Hulk”, then talks began to release “Thor” and “Captain American” into theaters, all culminating to this magic moment, the production of “The Avengers”, which will be direct sequels to these films and follow the same mythology. “The Avengers” will also feature additional Marvel characters Hawkeye, Black Widow and Nick Fury. Marvel Studios Developing Three Live-Action Superhero Television Series

Three new live-action television series are in the works at Marvel Studios, Slashfilm.com is reporting. After Disney acquired the studio, Jeph Loeb, who has previously worked on such shows as ‘Lost,’ ‘Heroes,’ ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and ‘Smallville,’ was appointed to run the television division. He decided to bring the three series, based on Marvel superheroes, to the small screen. Peter Sarsgaard has been cast in Warner Brothers’ upcoming adaptation of DC Comics’ “Green Lantern” as the villainous Hector Hammond. Originally appearing in the pages of 1961′s “Green Lantern”, the character was created by John Broome and Gil Kane. Hammond was exposed to the radiating energies of a strange meteor, which gave him telepathic powers and also mutated his features, giving him an exaggeratedly-large head. Marc Silvestri, best known in comics as a renowned artist on the “X-Men” titles, one of the cofounders of Image Comics, Top Cow CEO and executive producer of the big-screen adaptation of “Wanted”, is taking on the executive producer role again for an upcoming comic book adaptation. Ryan Reynolds has been cast in the role of the eponymous title hero in the upcoming adaptation of the DC comic “Green Lantern,” about Hal Jordan, a daredevil test pilot who becomes a member of an intergalactic police force who use weapons called power rings that are fueled by fearlessness. Martin Campbell is directing “Green Lantern”, which is expected to start production in January of 2010. Box Office Mojo is listing a new release date for Martin Campbell’s big-screen adaptation of “Green Lantern” for DC, moving it from December 17th 2010 to June 17th 2011. Whether or not this will affect plans to start shooting in Australia in September or if the move is to give Campbell more time for post-production and FX is unknown. Hitfix is reporting that Bradley Cooper (“Alias”, “The Hangover”) is a frontrunner to portray Hal Jordan in Martin Campbell’s adaptation of the DC title “Green Lantern” though no deal has been signed yet.
