5 Days of War

5 Days of War Movie Review

Saturday, September 3rd, 2011

Title: 5 Days of War Director: Renny Harlin Starring: Rupert Friend, Richard Coyle, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Val Kilmer, Heather Graham, Johnathon Schaech, Rade Sherbedgia, Dean Cain, Andy Garcia There are those direct-to-video movies that somehow, rather inexplicably and seemingly unfairly, bypass theaters altogether and arrive on DVD with an entirely unearned stench of career desperation (this was to be the fate of “Slumdog Millionaire,” actually, until Fox Searchlight rescued it from the clutches of Warner Bros., who knew not what they had — or at least not how to market it), and then there are those straight genre programmers that feature a third-tier wrestler-turned-actor, and were never being made with theatrical…

Title: 5 Days of War Directed By: Renny Harlin Written By: Mikko Alanne, David Battle Cast: Rupert Friend, Val Kilmer, Andy Garcia, Dean Cain, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Heather Graham Screened at: NYC, 7/5/11 Opens: August 19, 2011 This is a dramatized coverage of the year 2008 five-day war between Russia and Georgia over the disputed province of South Ossetia—which had broken away from Georgia and declared an unrecognized independence. Finnish Director Renny Harlin (“Die Hard 2,” “Cliffhanger”) exploits this principal theme of scriptwriters Mikko Alanne and David Battle: a journalist covering the war is determined to get out photos showing Russian brutality to the world. The photos did, in fact, get…

First Image From The Set Of Francis Ford Coppola's Twixt

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

The first image from Francis Ford Coppola’s upcoming horror ‘Twixt’ has arrived showcasing actress Elle Fanning.  The photo snapped is of the young performer being directed by Coppola on set.  Done up in goth like attire, the thirteen year old Fanning plays a ghost in the upcoming movie that follows a “declining writer” by the name of Hall Baltimore (played by Val Kilmer) who finds himself in a little town while on a book tour.  While there he ends up in the middle of a murder mystery surrounding a young girl.  After being visited by a ghost named V (Fanning), Baltimore comes to find the truth behind the killing that…

Boondock Saints

DVD Review: Boondock Saints, Kill The Irishman and Not As A Stranger

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

You must give writer-director Troy Duffy credit. Whatever one thinks of his talents or disposition (and I was personally on the receiving end of some angry, harassing phone calls after my review of his debut film), the dude knows perhaps better than any filmmaker of the past 15 years how to milk a living (marginal, one presumes, but still) from one fleetingly hot spec script, and movie. After being on the receiving end of some undeniably cruddy and cruel behavior from originating funder/distributor-to-be Miramax, ‘The Boondock Saints’ came out in 2000 via super-indie releaser Indican, and grossed under $50,000 domestically. After pimping movie merchandise and various home video releases for…

Bloodworth

Bloodworth Movie Review

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Title: Bloodworth Director: Shane Dax Taylor Starring: Val Kilmer, Reece Thompson, Hilary Duff, Kris Kristofferson, Dwight Yoakam, W. Earl Brown, Frances Conroy, Hilarie Burton With its just-so production design, characterized chiefly by rust, and a gallery of weathered and otherwise stunted characters fumbling toward some vaguely defined senses of purpose or peace, “Bloodworth”, based on William Gay’s novel “Provinces of Night”, slots comfortably in the cinematic canon of Southern Gothic, wherein everything and everyone is dadgum country-fied, and, well, ain’t that interesting and grand? This isn’t to say that the film, a drama about the long shadows of alcoholism, familial neglect and demons unaddressed, is a terrible or hokey thing,…

Kill the Irishman Poster

Kill The Irishman Movie Review

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

Title: Kill the Irishman Directed By: Jonathan Hensleigh Starring: Ray Stevenson, Vincent D’onofrio, Val Kilmer, Christopher Walken, Linda Cardellini, Robert Davi, Vinnie Jones, Tony Lo Bianco, Steve Schirripa, Paul Sorvino, Jason Butler Harner, Laura Ramsey You’d think having some source material to work from would make a screenwriter’s job pretty easy. Well, that’s certainly not the case and that’s incredibly present in Jonathan Hensliegh’s latest piece, Kill the Irishman. The film was inspired by the book To Kill the Irishman: The War That Crippled the Mafia by Rick Porrello, which was based on the true story of Danny Greene, a fearless man who went from nothing to toppling the Cleveland…

Dennis Hopper's Daughter Not Able to Attend Funeral

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

With divorce proceedings still being handled between the late Dennis Hopper’s estate and his estranged wife Victoria Duffy, their 7-year-old daughter, Galen Grier Hopper, had to miss her father’s funeral, the UK’s Daily Beast is reporting.  The actor’s multimillion-dollar estate is still being fought over, and may not be settled for several years, leaving Galen without the chance to say goodbye to her father. Duffy’s friends said that Galen was dis-invited to the funeral.  Meanwhile, Hopper’s friends said that Duffy is using Galen as a pawn, and wouldn’t let her go.  Hopper’s attorney, Joe Mannis, contacted Duffy’s lawyers with a letter from the ‘Easy Rider’ star the day before the funeral….
