NBC’s new singing competition show “The Voice” has gone up ten percent in ratings, putting NBC as the winner of the ratings race for Tuesday, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Shows “The Voice” beat out were the elimination episode of “Dancing with the Stars”, “Glee”, and “NCIS”. This performance gave NBC its highest nonsports rating in the timeslot since Nov. 29, 2005.

The show rated 5.6 in the key demographic of 18 to 49 with 12.4 million viewers. This performance is higher than its premiere ratings, which were 5.1, 11.8 million.

Having seen “The Voice”, it would appear that “American Idol” has its work cut out for them in the area of viewer retention. “The Voice” seems to address the problems “Idol” has been afflicted with–joke auditions, wishy-washy judging and coaching, and the “popularity contest vs. singing contest” factor, simply by having the coaches–singers CeeLo, Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, and Blake Shelton–turn their backs to potential contestants in order to blind-audition them. The coaches are also directly involved with the singers, since this is a competition for the coaches as well–at the end of the season, only one coach can brag that they found the winner of “The Voice”.
