Doug Jones: Actor
Chris: Hey people this is Chris Staviski again with Mr. Brian Corder Toxic Shock TV, Alright, right now I am down at the Haunt Expo with the man who you have seen in numerous movies, numerous movies; Mr. Doug Jones. You may remember him as Abe Sapien in the great Guillermo Deltorro movie Hell Boy. Right here I have Mr. Doug Jones! Can you say hi to the crowd out there? Doug Jones: Uh, Hi, crowd out there, how are ya? Chris: That's exactly what I wanted to here. Alright! Now Mr. Doug Jones you have been acting for numerous years, can you tell us a little bit about your start and why you wanted to get into acting? Doug Jones: Oh My Goodness, I wanted to get into acting because I was a loser, skinny, geeky kid, sitting at home with not many friends, the TV was my best friend when I was a kid. I would watch TV and Sitcoms and variety shows, I thought well if my best friend is the TV then I need to get on TV don't I, I think thats kinda how it came about. So I wanted to be an actor ever since I was a youngster because of the whole fantasy of it all and this is me growing up in Indiana. Years and years later I ended up in Los Angeles in 1985 as an Bank Management Trainee, it was my excuse to get out here. The bank fired me after eight months; which they should have done because I sucked as a banker. But when they fired me they did me a nice favor of letting me start my acting career, pushing me into it basically. I went on unemployment, within six months I got my first agent and booked my first TV commercial as a dancing mummy on Southwest Airlines. Chris: Nice. Doug Jones: Yeah! Yeah! So my first legitimate acting job was being wrapped from head to toe in dirty bandages, that kinda voted for what was ahead. I have done several creatures since then of course I am almost at one hundred commercials now. In films? I was Billy Butcherson in Hocus Pocus, that was the floppy goofy zombie guy, I was one of the vampires on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I was the leader of the gentlemen the tall leader of the gentlemen actually. I don't have my resume in front of me so I can't think of them all off of the top of my head but I was a alien in Men In Black 2, I played Pencil head in Mystery Men, if you you all remember that, that was a fun flick, I was in Bat Man returns as one of Danny Devito's sidekicks the thin clown, that was my name in the credits actually "Thin Clown" kinda describes me as a person don't you think? Chris: Actually by looking at you your looking a little over weight (Laugh), you'll see in the pictures here Mr. Jones here is a tad bit on the thin side, just a little bit. Doug Jones: if you are seeing pictures that are taken today, the choker I am wearing is actually one of Abe Sapiens eyes; which was part of my make-up in Hell Boy, Yeah this is what you would call a collectors piece, one of a kind, yeah, I got the eyes from the make-up guys before I left, I said I must have. Chris: The studio hasn't asked for them back yet? Doug Jones: No, SHHH! They don't know I have it, don't tell anybody out there OK! Chris: Your a very very graceful actor, especially in your movements and your voice. Can you let us know a little bit about the training you have had? Doug Jones: Oh Thank you! Well I have a Bachelor's Degree in Theater and Video and TV Broadcasting from Ball State U in Indiana and as far as the physicality being 6"3, half and weighing 140, I thought to myself I am not going to be a romantic leading male what do I have to do? I have to either be goofy, funny or scary and my whole career has been both of those things either funny or scary parts and the physicality was put to good use. In college I joined a mime group. I didn't know what to do with myself so the leader of the mime group started this group call mime or matter, Get it? It's a joke See, He said, "you gotta be a mime man", I said, "What's a mime? So I gotta learn how to create walls and pull ropes, ride bicycles that weren't there that kind of thing. I have been a mime ever since, I have my own little one man act that I do and did and so the mime training came in handy also when I was in college I got the role of Charlie Cardinal the University Mascot, that was my first gig wearing a creature suit of some sort. It was a big cardinal with skinny legs and floppy feet. So everyone sees me coming and says let's put something on him, yeah let's cover that face and put something on him and I am not that bad looking am I? Really? Chris: No not at all, your better looking than Brian Corder that is for sure, I'm just joking! Now, you worked with Mr. Spike Jones on Adaptation, how was that? Doug Jones: Oh, I loved the movie number one and Spike Jones is like one of your friends from college, so unassuming and a regular guy, he has got a great wacky corky sense of humor and he is great just to hang out with. He was definitely a nice guy, I was pulled into that project to play Agustus Margery who is a famous orchid hunter, Orchid hunter and famous shouldn't be used in the same sentence but he actually was a real life character that I got to play, it was kind of a flash back scene in the movie where Nicholas Cage was reading from the book that he is supposed to be adapting into a screen play and he is reading the chapter on the orchid hunters who die in the field or murdered and my character was murdered, he was beaten to death by orchid thief's again Orchid and thief's who would bother, it was a rare one. It was a great fun day of me shivering to death in fake rain in a forest scene and getting beaten and pulverized by two stunt guys. It was awesome, awesome. Spike Jones was nice enough to write me personal letter after he was editing to thank me and to tell me what I great job I did. A director of his stature did not need to send me a personal letter it was very very sweet of him |

Chris: What director have you worked with has given you the most freedom to really just go with your character and allow you to do it your way? Doug Jones: I am going to give you two names one would be Guillermo Deltorro from Hell Boy and also worked with him on Mimmick and five years before that. He recently directed me in Pan's Labyrinth which is a spanish language film that comes out in the states here in October 2006. Guillermo is one of those directors' that loves what I bring to the table naturally and tweaks a little bit and lets me run with whatever character he gives me, I love him for that, I trust when he wants to change something; I am doing or wants to tweak; I trust him more than any director I have worked with before because his instincts are so real and pure My other director friend I love is from Hocus Pocus, Kenny Ortega. He directed Newsies and was more known for choreography because he is a dance choreographer person. He loved my movements and really let me play and let me do whatever I wanted to do, elbows, knees, "get them going, get them moven, he gave me a lot of freedom. Chris: You have Pans Labyrinth coming this October. What other movies are we going to be able to see you in? Doug Jones: I have two movies coming out in April of 2006 I have Bench Warmers coming out, Bench Warmers is a comedy with Sony pictures starring David Spade, Rob Schneider and John Heder of Napoleon Dynamite and John Lovitz, I play John Lovit's butler in the film and I also happen to be a robot, so I am his robot butler. It is actually a co staring film for me, I am throughout the entire film and they are indeed using my own voice, so when you here "Lunch is on the way Mr Carmichael" that will be me as the butler robot and that is in April 2007, then in July, sometime in early July, Lady In The Water will be coming out in theaters every where, that is the next M. Night Shyamalan movie coming, of course M. Night Shyamalan the famous director of Sixth Sense a Signs and The Village and The Lady In The Water is a dark fairy tail movie that I played a creature in, like an ape like creature from the forest I don't know much more about it because he wouldn't tell me anymore about it. I wasn't able to read a script, I wasn't able to do anything or seeing anything or hear a story line. I think I am a part of the twist ending so I think that is why I know nothing, he is very protective of his material because it's all surprise. You know In fact I am doing some pick-up shots for that on the green screen this coming week, that will be great and that is in July that comes out, then in October will be Pans Labyrinth. I have also done a couple of TV pilots too, one for Comedy Central called Gay Robot, So if that gets picked up we will have more to talk about won't we. What do you suppose I play in Gay Robot? Chris: Hey, what about a Gay Robot? Doug Jones: Right exactly. Chris: Do you have any advise out there for any up and coming actors or filmmakers, butlers? Doug Jones: Yes! butlers do whatever your boss says, actors know your type, know what your character type is, if you are a Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt handsome person or a Julia Roberts, Michelle Pfeifer pretty person then market yourself as a leading character, if you look like me or anything that isn't them or if your a little overweight, underweight or goofy, slight of chin, have a long neck and fat neck, have a bald head; whatever it is know your type and know what you see on screen and be honest with your look because there is lots of looks for every type and once you are familiar with your own type and honest with your own type then you can market yourself that way and find work that is that and the other thing is if your anywhere in the country that is not Los Angeles or New York City you might have trouble finding work so eventually you might want to get yourself to the big movie and TV that has a industry and for directors if your doing a project for independent film and want to attract actors that get paid large amounts of money normally; write to us, call us, get in touch with our agent and do a pitch with your script, do a pitch with your story and put your heart and soul into it and show us what kind of passion you have for your project and we might share that passion with you and might say yes we want to do your film. That is what I would say, I have done lots of short film and lots of independent features for people that might not believe in there project that fits a character I might like to play and not played before. That is what I would say. Big Love. Chris: On that note we have a movie coming up. This is Doug Jones it was a pleasure and we are huge fans of yours, we are going to continue being huge fans and were looking forward to seeing Gay Robot, that is going to be awesome. Thank you very much Doug Jones: Well thank you for having me. Chris: Thank you, Alright, this is Chris in for Brian from Toxic Shock TV. Thank You. |
