Actor Shelley Mali, who is most remembered for playing an electronics-store clerk in ‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin,’ was calm before he repeatedly stabbed his ex-girlfriend Kendra Beebe in August 2008, she testified on August 31 at his attempted murder trial. People.com is reporting that Beebe told a jury in Vista, California that she felt primal, instinctual fear when Malil calmly walked up to her while they were at a barbecue and pulled a knife from behind his back.

Beebe also told the jury that Malil stabbed her more than 20 times, including three times in the torso. At the time of the attack, she said she was socializing with local musician David Maldonado on a patio, and Malil seemed agitated, especially since she had recently ended their relationship. In his defense, Malil’s lawyer said he thought he was fighting Maldonado off. Malil faces charges of premeditated attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and residential burglary, and could be sentenced to 21 years to life in prison if convicted.
