While fans of Katy Perry and Russell Brand were surprised when they announced their divorce plans on December 30, 2011, the media was skeptical of their union from the beginning. David Caplan, a celebrity-news editor who has worked at such publications as People and Star, told MTV News the the singer and actor were mismatched, despite their eccentric personalities.

Perry’s “so glamorous, pop ans sexy, and (Brand) is diametrically not like that,” Caplan also said. “Plus, she’s more of a partier than he know, so their lifestyles were at odds.”

Despite the rumors leading up to the divorce announcement, the revelation isn’t a shock, Caplan added. “It’s one of those celeb splits where the writing was on the wall for months.” Since its uncommon for celebrities to acknowledge tabloid reports, the two “denied any marital trouble on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ several weeks ago,” Caplan added.

“Then came the news this week that they had a big blowup and spent Christmas apart…she in Hawaii, and he i London,” Caplain said. “They clearly decided not to keep it a secret and just put on a happy front.”

Rob Shuter, a columnist for HuffPost Celebrity, also said the marriage was “under pressure for some time. I’m surprised (Russell) did so many interviews denying the troubles…When a married couple chooses not to spend the holidays together, you know something is up.”
