This week on “Project Runway All Stars,” the group had to create a look based on a muse–a person they’ve found on the streets of New York City that has amazing street style. They also had to make this look from the clothes others have given, literally off their backs.
The challenge is a good challenge, one that should really test the mettle of the designers. Jerell, however, goes a little overboard with his design, making what can only be described as a weird conglomeration of patterns and colors. Jerell claims the outfit shows his love for ethnic fabrics, but his outfit also shows a lot of love to a woman’s midsection–too much love, in fact. Isaac Mizrahi felt that the outfit was distasteful, and I’d have to agree. On top of that, it’s tacky.
The outfit’s craziness and tackiness would have made me think it would have gotten Jerell voted off. However, Anthony is the one to go home. His jumpsuit was a delightful throwback to the ’40s, but his garment didn’t follow the rules of this challenge, which was to use 50% of the recovered clothes in the outfit. Sadly, this is what caused Anthony to get sent home.
The winner of this challenge was Mondo, who’s designing aesthetic fit the challenge perfectly. However, the judges felt that while his Tokyo street style-inspired outfit was too perfect. It was so stylized that a person wearing it off the rack wouldn’t be able to make it her own. I didn’t see anything wrong with the outfit on that level.
