John Travolta has explained the reasoning behind the cover of ‘This Christmas,’ his recent Christmas album with his ‘Grease’ co-star Olivia Newton-John, which has been heavily criticized. While attending the Qantas Spirit of Australia Party on Wednesday night, the actor-turned-singer explained to toofab the message the two wanted to convey with the cover. The photo of the former co-stars, which The Washington Post called one of the worst of 2012, features them sitting next to each other with cups of espresso, surrounded by Christmas trees and presents.
Travolta said he called Newton-John with the idea to make the album, and she was jealous, because she wished she had come up with the idea. However, Travolta said the actress came up with the even better idea to donate the proceeds to charity, so they picked their favorite songs to sing.
As for the cover, Travolta said it’s meant to convey that people would be comfortable enough to go into his house and hang out and sing songs with them. He added that he thinks that sentiment is successful with the image and vibe created by the cover and the songs featured on the album.
